There is a moment, between that time when we are fully asleep and then fully awake, that our spirit man is awakened to a reality beyond the physical that we live in. Sometimes we hear and see things that seem profound, yet may not make much sense. Simply put- God is talking. Are we listening?
Such a moment took place this morning when I saw a simple, white candle burning like the ones you see at make-shift memorials when people are senselessly killed, and their loved ones want them remembered beyond the time when the event becomes yesterday’s news. Right after I saw this candle, I heard the words “requiem of a nation” ring out in my spirit. By this time I was fully awake!
Memories began flooding my mind of a by-gone era when I was a kid- specifically when we lived around Baltimore, MD in the early 1960s. This was the time in our nation’s history when every school day started with prayer and the pledge of allegiance to our flag, our nation- one nation under God. Abortion was illegal, homosexuals (the extremely few that there were in those days) stayed in the closet, adultery and fornication was frowned upon, and very few people lived together before marriage. It was a time when those who had sacrificed so much during the great depression and WW2 had entered into a season of abundant prosperity. We were the most powerful nation on earth, blessed by God. For many, life was good!
It was also the time of the beginning of the civil rights movement for black Americans. I remember this vividly because we lived right next to an elementary school that I was not allowed to attend with my friends because they were black and I was white. Every morning I got on a bus with other white kids and went to an all-white school. When I asked Mom why, she related a story that I could tell she was still angry about. It was of a time when she was stationed (we were a Navy family) at Norfolk, VA. She and another Navy friend (who happened to be black) went off base for lunch. The guy at this restaurant told Mom that he would serve her, but not her black friend. (If he had known Mom was Jewish, he probably would have kicked them both out!) Mom went ballistic and read this guy the riot act all the while her friend was trying to get Mom to leave and not create more of a scene. (We learned early on that you did NOT want to get on the receiving end of the “wrath of Mom”!)
We watched images of Dr. Martin Luther King on our black and white TV and cheered them on. Our nation was in the midst of a great turning point where all citizens would be truly equal. We were on the verge of becoming the greatest nation on earth. Then, in our little state of Maryland, an unknown atheist flew under the radar and somehow managed to get God kicked out of the public schools. Ten years later, it became legal to kill our tiniest citizens just because they were inconvenient. In the meantime, the hippy movement grew with its free-love mantra which was simply a license for fornication and adultery. Mind-altering drugs flourished in this “God is dead” environment, except that God was only “dead” in the minds of these deceived individuals.
Fast-forward to today. Over 55 million innocent babies have been murdered. The hedges that God placed around our nation have fallen and people are dropping like flies from natural disasters, terrorist attacks, gang and drug violence, school and other public shootings, and diseases that should have been eradicated, but we aborted the very children who would have found the cures! Now, our infamous supreme court justices have legalized same-sex marriage in defiance of many states who have made it known that they don’t want this!
When you ask many Christians why Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed, they will say that it is because of their blatant sexual sins, however that is not what the Bible says. Ezekiel 16:49-50 says: “The sin of your sister Sodom was this: She lived with her daughters in the lap of luxury–proud, gluttonous, and lazy. They ignored the oppressed and the poor. They put on airs and lived obscene lives. And you know what happened: I did away with them.” (MSG) Simply put, Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed for pride, gluttony, and laziness. Sexual sin was just a symptom of these underlying causes. The recent supreme court decision to legalize same-sex marriage is a symptom of many larger issues. We’ve been a prideful nation filled with lazy people!
So, what’s the answer? Is it too late? I don’t believe it is too late, but it is 11:59 on God’s clock. God’s people need to act NOW! Put aside childish ways. Pray and seek God’s face. Write the US Senate and Congress. Register and vote! Quit judging and condemning the lost- instead love them into the kingdom. They desperately need this- they KNOW something is happening, but don’t know what it means.
Before anyone knew who Barak Obama was, the Lord told me he would be the next president. He was the next wake-up call. Two years into his first term, the Lord spoke again and said that if God’s people don’t pray, Hillary Clinton would be the next president. It is my belief that if she is elected it will be for a lack of prayer and repentance on the CHURCH’S part, and heaven will sing a requiem dirge over this land: one nation no longer under God.
