What Gives You your Identity? Who Are You Anyway?

Jesus heals blind man

How would you like to be known as “Fat son of John”? How about “Scar Face son of Timmy”? Would you like people to call you “Stuttering daughter of Doug”? In the single Bible verse of Mark 10:46, a man who has come to be known as “Blind Bartimaeus” or “Blind son of Timaeus” approaches Jesus and cries out to be healed. This man desperately wants not only healing for his eyes, but for his identity to be changed. He addresses Jesus by a known Messianic title: “Jesus, son of David”. He understands identity and not only addresses Jesus for who He is, but continuously cries out until his prayer is answered. We are never told his given name, but never again would he be known as “blind”.

Who are you? Who do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you see “Old (your name)”? Do you see “Fat (your name)”? How about “Failure (your name)”? Don’t you think it’s time to see you as God sees you? Don’t you know that you are fearfully and wonderfully made; that God, Himself breathed His very breath into you; that He carefully knit you together in your mother’s womb? Don’t you think its past time to see you as God sees you; as He created you to be?

Some of you already know that Jesus made you to be a teacher, a prophet, a prosperous business person, a loving wife and mother of many, or any other type of person you could be, but Satan, the enemy of our souls, has lied to you about your identity. He has told you that you are too old, too fat, too skinny, too young, too dumb, too whatever-you-want-to-call-it to be who you know deep within you that you are.

So my question to you is: Who are you going to listen to? Will you continue to listen to the voices in your head telling you who you can’t be or what you can’t do? Will you instead listen to the voice deeper within your very spirit that tells you who you really are? Listen. Do you hear Him calling? Do you hear Him whispering to you out of the depths of love to come to Him; to keep crying out to Him until He says: “Be healed! Be who you are really supposed to be!”
